Category is a property that each move has, starting in Generation IV, that determines whether the move is a Physical-based move, a Special-based move, or a Status move. Prior to Generation IV, all moves were either Physical-based or Special-based depending on their type.

Categories[edit | edit source]

Physical[edit | edit source]

Physical moves are moves that do damage according to the user's Attack stat versus the target's Defense stat. The higher the attacking Pokémon's Attack stat is, the more damage its Physical-based attacks will do; the higher the target's Defense stat is, the lower the damage Physical-based attacks do against it.

In Generation III and earlier, all damaging moves of the following types were considered Physical:

Special[edit | edit source]

Special moves are moves that do damage according to the user's Special Attack stat versus the target's Special Defense stat. The higher the attacking Pokémon's Special Attack stat is, the more damage its Special-based attacks will do; the higher the target's Special Defense stat is, the lower the damage Special-based attacks do against it.

In Generation III and earlier, all damaging moves of the following types were considered Special:

Status[edit | edit source]

Status moves are moves that don't deal direct damage to the foe, and thus are considered neither Physical nor Special. These include moves that lower the foe's stats, that afflict the foe with a status condition (without doing any actual damage), moves that raise the user's stats, and so on.
