Plot[edit | edit source]

On their way to Fallarbor Town, Ash and company pass through a scorchingly hot desert, only to pass out from the heat. When Ash and friends awake, they meet the eccentric Winstrate Family, who saved them from perishing under the sun. In return for their help, they ask for a Pokémon battle, each of their four family members; Victor, Victoria, Vivi and Vicky, are to battle each member of Ash and company.

Off in the desert, Team Rocket passes out too and is rescued by Vito Winstrate, the eldest child of the family. He explains that he left to battle in the Pokémon League, but all he really wants to do is raise Pokémon. He explains that he fears that truth would be a hard blow to his family, who are very proud of his strength. James offers to talk to them for him.

The first match up is Brock against Victor. Brock uses Mudkip against Victor's Zigzagoon, but is quickly defeated by a surprise Thunderbolt. May is up next against Victoria and her Roselia. Using her Beautifly, and her revved up spirit due to Drew owning a Roselia, she defeats Victoria in two attacks.

Max is next and borrows Ash's Corphish to battle Vivi, the youngest, and her Marill. He defeats her in one of Corphish's brash attacks, breaking her heart.

The first battles end in 2:1 in Ash and friends' favor. Ash takes on the eldest member, Grandma Vicky, with his Pikachu versus her Camerupt. The Pokémon seem evenly matched until things turn for the worst when Camerupt goes on a stampede, spewing fire everywhere.

Nearby, Vito is still with Team Rocket, watching the battle from afar. Seeing Camerupt going straight for the house, he uses his Alakazam to cool it down with Rain Dance, albeit secretly. Believing the rain to be pure luck, Vicky concedes the battle, just thankful Camerupt stopped.

Soon Team Rocket appears and snatches Pikachu up in their balloon. Team Rocket thanks Vito for his help in finding Pikachu. Seeing they are not the good Samaritans he thought they were, he use his Alakazam to free Pikachu. They attempt to try again until Vito uses his Swellow to send them blasting off.

Recognizing the Swellow, Vicky talks loud enough for Vito to hear and says she didn't mean to be so pushy in him becoming a Trainer and says for him to follow his own path. Touched by her words, Vito heads out to find his own destiny.

Ash and friends head off for Fallarbor Town, but not before the Winstrates say goodbye in their own way, by having Camerupt use Eruption, causing Ash and friends to run away.
